Don't proofread until you're finished with the writing and editing
Make sure you have no distractions
Focus on spelling, grammar and punctuation, not the content
Find a system that works for you - split up what you're looking for, e.g. on one read through look at spelling, and another look for grammar
Take notes if you spot an issue
If you change a few words, proofread the entire sentence/paragraph again
Check facts, dates, quotes, tables, references, and text boxes outside of the main text separately
Become familiar with your frequent mistakes
Check the format last
